This is motivation Monday, and today we’re talking about why hiring a better business coach isn’t the answer to your productivity problems.
Okay, this is probably going to be a soapbox episode today – fair warning! So here’s why I don’t think hiring a better (or first!) business coach is the answer to your productivity problems when you’re a work-at-home mom. First and foremost: Because if you don’t know what to work on, that’s a productivity problem – not a business strategy one.
See, most coaches (the business ones) are going to help you develop the right strategies, get out of your own way, troubleshoot launches, all that. But they do expect you to be already executing on the day-to-day parts of running a business – you know, like making to-do lists, actually following those to-do lists, creating consistent hours for yourself, and knowing approximately how long your standard content tasks take you. That’s when they can swoop in and help you streamline your strategy, change your direction just this little tiny bit that’s going to make all the difference, or give you that kick in the pants pep talk that you totally needed.
But you still have to be productive, for yourself, in your own time, first. You’re expected to show up with that kind of grown-up, consistent, I-make-time-for-what-I-want-to-do behavior. All right?
So that’s why I think you need to get really grounded on the foundations first before you head off to that fancy new sales & marketing coach. Because you don’t want to waste her time helping you decide what to-do is top of the list for tomorrow – you want her eyes on your site, your messaging, your sales strategy, all that good stuff! That’s why you hired her!
So what I want to invite you to do is consider if you really need to practice showing up for yourself, for this new business, on a consistent basis first. Try setting certain work hours, and pre-planning what you’re going to do in them. And if you need help on this, I’m absolutely here for you – because I’m a productivity coach, not a business-strategy-all-the-sales one.
