Do you have a kid about to go to school for the first time ever? Or on the other hand, a kid about to go to college? Are you expecting a new baby in the near future?
When these kinds of family life/schedule changes are on the horizon and rapidly approaching, it’s actually a really smart idea for you to lean into them and just play with how your daily schedule might look after the baby comes. After your kindergartener goes to school.
This came up because one of my clients recently told me that she was expecting two of these major changes to her family, but she was still living through the day-to-day reality of now.
She knew things would shift – and in some ways, be so much better later – but she felt it was almost disloyal to the present to dream and anticipate.
I disagree – so here’s what I told her.
Have you played with what your day-to-day will look like when your senior goes to college? Just do this as a dreaming/vision exercise.
What are your work hours going to look like then? See what comes up for you – what new holes in your calendar appear – that God might want to fill with new clients and/or these new marketing ideas.
Because these time blocks are real, and going to happen – just because they’re not in existence now, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t plan and prepare for them.
And if that means just happily dreaming about the when, you go for it.
Because in just a few short weeks, this is going to be your new reality.
Don’t let it catch you off guard.
Don’t leave it till the last minute.
Don’t say, “I had no idea it was going to be this way.”
You do have the time now to dream. To envision what might be.
Even from just a practical standpoint, of how much time that kid needs you to ferry them around or grade homework or go to their activities.
Make a guess. See how it feels. And start anticipating your next season in life.
Because it’s opening up, right there in front of you.
You’ve got this.
