Are you an HSP-leaning woman who’s thinking about (or already started) a business? Is there anything you’re missing about how to run your day as a work-at-home HSP mom?
Let’s get the goods about structuring your day to account for HSP tendencies, showing up for your business when you’re highly sensitive, and clearing that all-too-familiar anxiety from your brain on a daily basis.
Because if you want to run a business as an HSP mom, you’re absolutely allowed – and these 3 tips are going to make it much easier. So let’s lean in.
Quiet for business calls
First thing you need to do: Have a firm “no noise” policy when listening to your courses – because you can’t concentrate on kids and trainings at the same time.
I know, I know, nothing earthshaking – but are you denying yourself even that? Not letting yourself even have study time without kids climbing all over you and asking you something every five minutes?
You shouldn’t be doing that. You can’t learn when you’re doing that!
And while courses may not be the solution to every single gap in your business, they’re sure helpful for a lot of them. (Even a webinar counts!)
So if you aren’t even respecting your own study or learning time, that’s got to change. Right now.
And if you’re having trouble giving yourself permission around this, just think of your kids: would you make them study some crucial info, for the very first time, surrounded by their noisy siblings?
No, I don’t think so. So quit doing that to yourself, too!
And in case you didn’t get it, this goes for coaching calls, too.
Whether you’re the coach, or you’re the client – you need quiet, and space, to be able to honestly, authentically process (and verbalize!) what’s going on for you – which you WON’T do if little ears are around.
Same for when you’re on with clients – your whole attention needs to be on THEM, not your little rug rats. It’s a matter of professional courtesy here. Okay?
Quiet for business videos
Once you’ve got that down, the next step becomes easier. Which is: extend your “no noise” policy to when you’re recording videos or podcast episodes for the business.
And I’d take it a step farther, and recommend a “no kids” policy when you’re “camera on,” too. Why? Because I can’t concentrate on my own stuff when I know somebody is watching.
(Especially when that somebody is NOT my target audience, and probably has a very different idea of what mommy’s talking about to her peers!)
In other words, give yourself the creative space you need for ideas to bubble up, be expanded on, and get recorded – in peace. As much as possible.
Now, you know I’ve got 5 kids. And I’m home all day with them. Plus we homeschool. Oh, and 2 of them are boys. So yeah, we’ve got a lot going on. My house is by no means quiet during the day.
So how do I handle this as a coach and a podcaster, who needs to be able to show up and record (sometimes on videos) without the kids yelling and screaming in the background?
Simple: I give my kids visual reminders when I’m on a call or doing a recording. They don’t have to walk by and ask (therefore interrupting me) – they just have to LOOK.
(Oh, and copious reminders before a coaching or batch recording session also help!)
So if I was coaching you, I’d walk you through the layout of your home, where you can get quiet, when you can get quiet, and what reminders your kids need so you can have that uninterrupted, (relatively) peaceful time you need to get in the zone.
Because mindset really matters, and the recording headspace is very different than the “I’m just uploading shownotes and MP3 files” here.
Got that?
Daily quiet for your brain
Now, the last thing I’m going to strongly recommend you do as an HSP business owner is take a 25-45 minute “decompress walk” every work day.
Yes, I said every day. No, it’s not too much.
Why? Because we need to clear our brains of all the stuff that went on – work or otherwise – so we can face the next day with a clear slate!
Otherwise, you’re going to stack up uncleared worries, post ideas, and #momlife thoughts in a huge jumble, till at the end of the week, you feel as if you’re stuck in the blender bowl, getting whirled around and around, when technically it’s the weekend but it doesn’t FEEL like the weekend. Because you still need time to process all that stuff.
You get me?
Instead, we’re going to implement a brain-clearing process DAILY, so that those anxiety- or planning-based issues never crop up.
Because you’re highly sensitive, and your thoughts need an outlet. All of ‘em.
So get that journal, head outside, and get moving.
Your brain, your body, your business, and your health will thank you for it.
Now, let’s bring this home.
Which of these 3 areas resonated most with you? Which one do you need to start doing first?
(You might need all 3 – that’s perfectly fine!)
I want you to make a commitment to yourself that you’re going to watch your next course video in peace and quiet, or record with zero kids around, or take a “business walk” tomorrow evening. (Or all three!)
Which one are you writing down in your planner? Adding to the bottom of your to-do list?
Pick at least one, get it in for tomorrow, and do it.
Because HSP entrepreneurs need a little extra care, and you deserve it.
After all, you’re one, too.
Where are you going to give yourself permission to need a little extra business quiet today?
