Being a mom and running a business is no small thing. We are constantly pulled in different directions. One moment you’re answering emails, the next you’re refereeing a sibling argument or cooking dinner.
For work-from-home (WFH) moms, it’s even trickier. The boundaries between work and family can disappear fast. But here’s what I’ve learned: you can take back your time, make space for what matters, and still grow your business.
I had the chance to share my story and my favorite time-saving strategies with Shae Spitz on R.E.A.L. Moms Podcast. Shae and I talked about motherhood, business, and the practical steps that let you enjoy both.
Today, I’ll walk you through the main takeaways from our conversation!
Balancing Motherhood, Business, and Joy: My Journey and Insights
I believe you don’t have to choose between your family and your business. You can create a life that works for both.
From Stay-at-Home Mom to Business Owner
I didn’t set out to become an entrepreneur. I thought I’d be a teacher, but discovered it wasn’t for me. I switched to an interdisciplinary degree, knowing it didn’t lead to a clear career path.
I got married young, had my first baby at 20, and spent the next 10 years raising five kids. My focus was on home and family.
Then, when my youngest was just six months old, I learned about online business. I gave myself a month to research. By the end of it, I decided to start, even though I had once sworn I’d never run a business.
That choice opened the door to the work I do now!
Designing a Life That Works
One of the first lessons I teach my clients is that you don’t need 8–10 hour workdays to be successful. You can structure your days so that your business fits in with your family—not the other way around.
That means setting boundaries. Just because you’re home doesn’t mean you’re on call for everyone. Protecting your time lets you give your best to both your work and your family.
My Coaching Process
When I work with a mom, we start with a full brain dump. Every responsibility, every task, every wish goes on the list.
Then, I create a “2.0 life” schedule. It’s built around what matters most to her: work, kids, self-care, and rest. I also help her work through the guilt that can come with putting herself on the list.
I offer free training to help moms start reclaiming their time right away.
Time Management Strategies That Work
If you want to get more done, work when your kids are occupied or out of the house. That might mean during school, daycare, naps, or early mornings.
I also like the Pomodoro Technique, which entails 25 minutes of focus, 5 minutes of rest. With this method, you get more done in less time.
And remember, your schedule should change as your family changes. What works now might not work in a year.
Tackling Work-from-Home Challenges
Working from home can be amazing, but it’s full of distractions. Housework, noise, and interruptions can pull you out of focus.
Sometimes the best fix is to create a dedicated workspace. Other times, it’s better to work outside the home for certain tasks.
And always, always treat family time as sacred. Put it on your calendar first.
Supporting Other Mompreneurs
What I love about mompreneurs is how we’re passionate about women supporting women. That’s why some of us, like Shae, would invest in real estate podcast production. It’s their way to lift each other up.
I also run my own show, Unbusy Mom, where I share powerful episodes with tips for busy moms.
Big Goals and Long-Term Vision
I dream big. I’ve imagined what it would take to build a million-dollar business. However, I also know that life changes. Kids grow, and seasons shift.
My advice is simple: don’t get stuck in the “someday in five years” mindset.
Start taking steps now. And if you think you’ve missed your chance, know that opportunities often come back around.
